Nick Vujicic’s passion for sharing the gospel is so strong it seems to radiate from him. But his journey as an evangelist has a beginning that could only be described as unexpected – a conversation with a caring janitor at his high school.
“I was set to do an accounting and financial planning degree. And a janitor at my high school one day looked at me, and he said, ‘You’re going to be a speaker!’ And I said, ‘You’re a crazy old man!”’
Nick’s friend went on to ask whether he knew there was a Bible club at their school.
“I said yes. He said, ‘Well, aren’t you a Christian?’ I said yes. He said, ‘Well, why don’t you go?’ and he put me on the spot!”
“I was a little ashamed to ever associate myself with the Bible club, believe it or not. I wanted to not be uncool right? I’m going to church Sunday, but I want to be cool Monday through Friday. He said, ‘Well let me organize the speech for you.’ For three months he was relentless in pursuing me. Trying to convince me. I finally said yes after he twisted my arm.”
So Nick had his first opportunity to get up in front of people and share who Jesus was.
“I got in front of these six kids, and – after I was done sharing – one girl cried. And I said, ‘What’s wrong?’ She said, ‘I was just touched’. And I’m thinking, ‘What do you mean?!'”
“Then I realized. She’s been touched, and she’s never going to be the same again. I started speaking – twelve times between ages seventeen and nineteen. A girl came up after one of the speeches, and she said as she was crying – ‘No one’s ever told me they love me. No one’s told me God loves me the way that I am.’ That’s when I knew I was born to be a speaker. God gave me the passion for lost souls. Even the the ones who were bullying me! The truth is you will never lay eyes on somebody on this earth that Jesus doesn’t love, and if we don’t tell them who Jesus is – who will?”
