Do you struggle to build discipline into your life?
It’s a myth that some people are just naturally more disciplined then others. According to Chrystal Evans Hurst, discipline is a skill and a mindset that everyone has to learn and anyone can cultivate.
“The answer to being disciplined is doing what you have to do when you don’t want to do it. That’s it. Discipline requires doing what you have to do so that you can do what you want to do.”
“It’s not any easier for you than it is for someone else. They’ve had to make a difficult decision just like you have to make a difficult decision.”
The main characteristics of discipline is that more often than not, it goes against the way we feel or what we desire in the moment.
“We have to decide to make that difficult decision despite what we feel like doing. Discipline is a decision that you make beyond what you feel.”
Discipline cannot be a decision made in the moment, because that’s when we are at our weakest and most vulnerable.
“It is a decision that you typically make in advance because you decide that regardless of how I feel when I get to this moment, this is what I’m going to do.”
While discipline can seem like a chore, Chrystal says it’s also a gift.
“Discipline is a gift you give to yourself, because once you get past that moment then you have built a modicum of self-respect.”
Chrystal reminds us that it took extraordinary discipline for Jesus to follow through with God’s call on His life while he was in the Garden of Gethsemane.
“He moved forward because of the joy set before Him. He had His eyes on how He would feel later about the moment He was in at that time.”
Chrystal Evans Hurst is an energetic, fun-loving “girl-next-door” who loves to encourage other women in fulfilling their full potential in Christ. Chrystal firmly believes God’s promise in Jeremiah 29:11, “I know the plans that I have for you…” and she desires to help other Christian women believe and apply that truth to their lives.
